International Scientific Conference «European Integration and Ukraine: Historical Memory and Migration Challenges» within the framework of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module (2-3.06.2026, hybrid format)
Within the framework of the implementation of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module “European Integration and Ukraine: Historical Memory and Migration Challenges”, the International Scientific Conference “European Integration and Ukraine: Historical Memory and Migration Challenges” was held on 2–3 July 2026 at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University.
The conference was organized in a hybrid format, with the majority of participants attending in person. The event was organized by the project team with the support of the Rectorate of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and the I. F. Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The conference brought together scholars, doctoral researchers, students, representatives of Ukrainian, Polish, and German universities and research institutions, as well as representatives of public authorities.
During the plenary session, participants had the opportunity to learn about the outcomes of the project team’s three years of work, as well as the thematic focus and specific features of implementing similar Erasmus+ Jean Monnet projects at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University and Sumy State University. Representatives of the State Archives of Zhytomyr Region and Associate Professor Andrii Sychevskyi of the Department of History of Ukraine presented their research achievements in the field of memory studies and its source base.
The conference programme addressed a wide range of topics, including Ukraine’s European integration, memory politics, the Russian–Ukrainian war, migration processes, Holocaust studies, and international academic cooperation.
A special anniversary panel dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Jerzy Giedroyc, the editor of the legendary journal Kultura and one of the most influential architects of Poland’s Eastern policy in the twentieth century, was held as part of the conference. Participants discussed the contemporary relevance of Giedroyc’s intellectual legacy, the role of historical memory in the Polish–Ukrainian dialogue, and the significance of his ideas for contemporary Europe.
On 3 July, the project team presented a textbook developed on the basis of the courses taught within the framework of the project, as well as a special issue of the journal Intermarum: History, Policy, Culture. A student project commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster was also presented.
On the same day, a workshop entitled “Historical Memory in the Multicultural Urban Space: Between the Local and the European (The Case of Zhytomyr)” was held.
A total of 68 participants received certificates of participation.

Project information: The project «European Integration and Ukraine: Historical Memory and Migration Challenges» aims to enhance Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes in History in response to contemporary challenges by improving knowledge of the fundamental principles of the European Union, Ukraine’s European integration process, historical memory policies, and European migration processes. The project also seeks to strengthen dialogue between academia and society, involving policymakers at the local and national levels, public officials, representatives of civil society, educational institutions at different levels, and the media.
