European Integration: Education, Youth, Sport and Culture in the Context of EU Enlargement

European integration involves not only political and economic reforms but also progress in education, youth policy, sport and culture. These areas play an important role in preparing countries and their citizens for the opportunities offered by European Union membership.

The 2026 Enlargement Package takes stock of progress made by candidate countries and potential candidates on their path towards EU membership. In particular, Albania, Moldova, Montenegro and Ukraine have made progress in the areas of education, youth, sport and culture, while further progress is still needed in other countries.

Strong education systems, expanded opportunities for young people, participation in sport and vibrant cultural sectors contribute to building resilient and inclusive societies. These areas also help prepare countries and their citizens to make the most of the opportunities associated with EU membership.
