Round table “European Practices in Media Education for Democracy” (15.02.2024, online)
On 15 February, 2024, a round table “European Practices in Media Education for Democracy” was held at the SHEI “Donbas State Pedagogical University”. The event took place within implementation of the EU-funded Programme Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module “European Practices in Media Education” (101085162 – EUPinMEd – ERASMUS-JMO-2022-HEI-TCH-RSCH).
More than 100 educators, media pedagogues, students of higher education from different cities of Ukraine (Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zhytomyr, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Lozova, etc.) joined the event.
Stanislav Chaichenko, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work of DSPU, and Inna Khyzhniak, Dean of the Faculty of Primary, Technological and Vocational Education, addressed those present with a welcome speech.
Among the speakers were both scientists and practitioners who discussed topical issues of media education and media literacy, shared the experience of implementing media education courses in educational institutions, the integration of media education into the educational process.
Coordinator of Jean Monnet Module “European Practices in Media Education “, Associate Professor of the Department of Primary Education Theory and Practice of DSPU, Olena ISHUTINA spoke about the implementation of the “European Media Education Studies” course in the training of future primary school teachers. Nataliia PONOMARENKO, media trainer, PhD, lecturer at the Mechanical Engineering College of Sumy State University, highlighted the topic “Media education as a means of preserving national identity”. Olena TARANENKO, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, IREX capacity building manager, shared her experience of the methodology of the project “Learn to Discern: Infomedia Literacy in Education”. Tetyana YEVTUKHOVA, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Natural and Mathematical Disciplines and Informatics in Primary Education of DSPU gave a speech “Teacher and social networks, or Houston, we really have problems”, dedicated to the peculiarities of the use of social networks by teachers. Yana BAKALIAR, a teacher of individual education of the Znyatsiv Secondary School I-III grades of the Veliky Luchkiv Village Council of the Mukachevo District of the Zakarpattia oblast, spoke about the formation of media literacy of primary education students in the lessons of the integrated course “Ukrainian Language and Reading”. Nataliia ANISIMOVA, an art teacher at the Bakhmut Primary School I-III grades No. 12 of the Bakhmut City Council of the Donetsk oblast, highlighted the pedagogical conditions for the formation of media literacy of primary education students in the lessons of the integrated course “Art”. Darina BATURA, a graduate student of the Department of Primary Education Theory and Practice of the DSPU, considered modern approaches to the formation of emotional competence and emotional intelligence of a teacher.
Separately, they discussed the issue of teacher training for media education in the context of the best practices of the European Union and the specifics of the use of social networks by teachers and students.
The round table was another step of the Donbas State Pedagogical University on the way to spread European educational practices in Ukraine, because it is media-literate citizens who are the key to the development of democracy in our country.
