Round table “Integration of European Values into Ukrainian Education, Science and Sport” (23.09.2024, Chernivtsi)

On 23 September 2024, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University hosted a roundtable discussion within the framework of the European Union’s Erasmus+ project Jean Monnet Module “Integration of European Values into Ukrainian Education, Science and Sport” (EVUESS).

The event was attended by more than 40 students of future physical education teachers of the Faculty of Physical Education and Human Health of the University, scientists, and invited guests.

The event was attended by Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, International and Humanitarian Activities, Professor Iryna OSOVSKA, Project Coordinator, Associate Professor Yaroslav HALAN, Project Team, Professors Yurii Moseychuk and Yaroslav ZORII, Secretary of the University Council of Young Scientists, Associate Professor Olha BESHLEI, and physical education teacher of Chernivtsi Gymnasium No. 15, winner of the Teacher of the Year 2018 and 2024 competitions Mykola NIHA.

Iryna OSOVSKA opened the event with a meaningful opening speech, in which she emphasised the strategic importance of international cooperation and the active involvement of students in international projects and programs. She stressed that such initiatives not only contribute to Ukraine’s deeper integration into the European educational space but also create opportunities to raise the standards of national education, science, and sports at the international level.

In his report, the project coordinator, Associate Professor Yaroslav HALAN, spoke in detail about the basic European values that underpin the activities of the European Union and the important activities implemented under the Jean Monnet/EVUESS module. In particular, he noted the importance of holding events such as the winter and summer school, where participants had the opportunity to learn more about European approaches to education, science, and sports. In addition, the project organised an international conference that brought together students, academics, and experts to discuss ways to integrate European values into the Ukrainian educational system.

Yaroslav HALAN, paid special attention to the European Sports Week 2024, which has become an important platform for promoting not only European values but also the ideals that unite sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Paris. According to him, such initiatives not only encourage young people to actively participate in sporting events, but also contribute to a healthy lifestyle, strengthening national consciousness and developing a sense of European identity.

Mykola NIHA shared his professional experience, spoke about his career in sports and the implementation of numerous sports projects, emphasising the importance of promoting sports among children and youth and integrating European approaches into educational processes.

A student majoring in 014 ‘Secondary Education (Physical Education)’ Christina CHUBOTARU made a presentation on the topic ‘Integration of European values into student life,’ emphasising the importance of implementing these principles in education and extracurricular activities.

The roundtable ended with an active discussion and debate involving students, teachers, and project participants. The participants of the event stressed that the integration of European values into the educational process is an important step towards the formation of a new generation of young people focused on democratic principles, mutual respect, and cooperation.
