Synergy of iCo-op and DESIRE TEMPUS projects in Zaporizhzhya National Technical University
Prospective students- students, postgraduate students, teachers – representatives of industrial enterprises and companies of Zaporizhzhya region. Such is the chain of participants in international educational TEMPUS projects ICo-op «Industrial co-operation and creative engineering education based on remote engineering and virtual instrumentation» (http://www.ico-op.eu) and DESIRE «Development of embedded system courses with implementation of innovative virtual approaches for integration of research, education and production in Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia »(http: // tempus desire.eu), which are being run in the Zaporizhzhya National Technical University (ZNTU).
The basis for such cooperation is the new Laboratory of Embedded Systems and Virtual Engineering, which was opened thanks to the synergy of these two projects in October last year at the Department of software, with the support of the rector of ZNTU Sergey Belikov. Today, the laboratory is actively working on the implementation of educational and research projects. Already we have the first tangible practical results – own developments, conference papers, articles in world-class scientific journals, inventors’ certificates, certificate from the National Exhibition competition “Outstanding scientific and practical achievements in education” in the nomination “Electronic educational resource.” Two research groups have been established: developers of RELDES remote laboratory (REmote Laboratory for Design of Embedded Systems) (supervisor Associate Professor Angelika Parkhomenko) and researchers of embedded systems reliability ISRT (Informational System Reliability Team) (supervisor Professor Galina Tabunshchyk).
University students have received tremendous opportunities thanks to modern equipment and licensed software, obtained according to the plans of the two projects – two laboratory servers, computers, different software and hardware platforms (Arduino, Altera Cyclone, Raspberry Pi), a platform for learning robotics Formula Flowcode Buggy, 3D- printer Leapfrog Creatr HS, 3D-scanner Gotcha, remotely controlled hybrid lab Goldi (development of the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany).
University teachers with projects gained new experience and skills, took part in trainings in the leading European universities and, as a result conducted trainings for their colleagues in ZNTU. Project coordinators Karsten Henke (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany) and Dirk van Merode (Thomas More, Mechelen, Antwerp, Belgium) conducted master classes for students and teachers of ZNTU in October last year. The university teachers in the framework of ICo-op project developed 4 new disciplines offered by Business School of ZNTU to improve the skills of industry professionals. And in the framework of the project DESIRE implementation 17 academic disciplines have been already upgraded or developed from scratch, and this work continues.
The result of fruitful scientific work of teachers within the project ICo-op was the monograph “The remote and virtual tools in engineering” under the general editorship of Professor K. Henke, project coordinator, and authors A.Parhomenko, G.Tabunshchyk, M. Polyakov, O.Gladkova, T. Kaplienko, T.Larionova (ISBN 978-966-2752-74-8). In addition, with the support of the project the textbook in English «Remote and virtual tools in engineering: student textbook» has already been prepared for publication. According to the DESIRE project program the teachers of ZNTU are currently completing work on three textbooks, the publication of which is planned this summer.
ZNTU also strengthened its ties with Ukrainian partner institutions. For example, teachers of the Software Department, together with colleagues of Kyiv University named after Borys Grinchenko, took part in the training «Technologies of 3D devices implementation in engineering education.” Training for teachers was held on the basis of the company FABBERS (Kyiv) last summer. During the training, the participants got acquainted with the technology of 3D printing and 3D scanning, with the methods of creating physical prototypes through virtual 3D-models with different materials that are used for 3D printing, as well as with specialized software used and its settings.
Through implementing projects the Distance Learning System started working in ZNTU. Within the project DESIRE implementation the teachers of Kyiv University named after Borys Grinchenko held a seminar for the teachers of ZNTU “Creation of modern e-learning system Moodle». Currently, a training course structure of the University has been developed, in which the disciplines developed within TEMPUS projects occupy a special place.
Last summer under the ICo-op project a pilot training on a special program “The remote and virtual tools in engineering” was completed. Forty-seven members – representatives of industrial enterprises and companies of Zaporizhzhya region, students and teachers of ZNTU gained new knowledge, practical skills and received appropriate certificates.

During the period of implementation of these two projects ZNTU established fruitful cooperation and signed agreements with such enterprises and companies: Motor Sich, ACTIV, Prokom, Noosphere Ventures, Livestream LLC, and Brig Retail. It allows to organize high-level practices and certification of students, professional development of company staff, as well as to carry out joint research.
Modern technologies are being actively implemented, not only in the learning process of students, but also in the professional work with future entrants. For example, platforms for learning robotics Formula Flowcode Buggy have been actively represented at the exhibition Prospective Student 2016 in Zaporizhzhya Kozak Palace, as well as on the Open Day in the assembly hall of ZNTU. On February 19, 2016 teachers of the Software Department prepared and held an Open Day for students of Zaporizhzhya technical lyceum, in particular for robotics team under the guidance of a teacher Tkachenko T.V .. The students, who actively participate in tournaments and competitions in robotics, acquainted with modern equipment and software of the laboratory of embedded systems and virtual engineering. Future applicants enthusiastically acquired the new information and teachers discussed ways of further cooperation with the lyceum and invited students to study at the Software Department of ZNTU.
Projects within the TEMPUS & ERASMUS + programs provide new opportunities for the development of education and science in ZNTU (http://zntu.edu.ua) and promote integration into the European cultural and economic space.
