Webinar «Military urbanism in European and Ukrainian urban planning traditions: archaeological and archival research, historical memory and modern state», within the framework of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet project (2.05.2025, online/offline)
Within the framework of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module «European Integration and Ukraine: Historical Memory and Migration Challenges», on 2 May 2025, at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University of hosted a webinar «“Military Urbanism” in the European and Ukrainian Urban Planning Tradition: Archaeological and Archival Research, Historical Memory and Current State» dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the first mention of Baturyn. The webinar was held in a mixed form. The event was organised by the project team, employees of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve «Hetman’s Capital» (Baturyn), with the participation of teachers and students, and the support of the Rectorate of the Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University.
As a result of the webinar, 21 participants received certificates.
The event was moderated by project manager Victoria VENGERSKA, and the project team was represented by Professor Olha BILOBROVETS, Associate Professors Oleksandr ZHUKOVSKYI and Ivan KOVALCHUK with presentations on the historical aspects of fortification and urban art. The presentations of archaeological, archival research and the modern concept of the museum were offered by the staff of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve «Hetman’s Capital» Yurii SYTYI, Nataliia PILTIAI, Maksym NESKUBA, representatives of scientific centres and universities of Poltava, Lutsk, and Nizhyn: Yurii PUGOLOVOK – PhD, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Union of Archaeologists of Ukraine, Maksym POTAPENKO – PhD, Associate Professor, Mykola Gogol Nizhyn State University, Serhii PANYSHKO – PhD, Associate Professor, Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University.
The participants of the event presented and discussed the peculiarities of the formation of cities on both the Left and Right Bank of Ukraine, their status and specifics of urban and fortification construction, the role of archaeological and archival research in the restoration of monuments and memory of the history and significance of Ukrainian cities in the pan-European political processes of the Middle Ages and early modern times.
A key point in the discussion of each topic was the emphasis on the fact that Ukraine has always been closely linked to European cultural and historical phenomena. The urbanisation and fortification focus of research is an additional confirmation of this point of view.
