Digital nominations in practice: early experiences from Erasmus Without Paper Champions
On May 19, 2026, the European Commission published the article “Digital nominations in practice: early experiences from Erasmus Without Paper Champions”, presenting the first practical experiences with the implementation of digital nominations within the Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) initiative
The publication highlights the experiences of three higher education institutions – the University of Cyprus, the University of Galway, and the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies – participating in the implementation of digital mobility management solutions through the EWP Dashboard
The article focuses on key challenges faced by universities in the student nomination process for mobility, including fragmented procedures, the use of different submission formats, spreadsheets, emails, and separate platforms, all of which create additional administrative burdens for international offices
According to the publication, digital nominations through Erasmus Without Paper are expected to provide a more standardised, efficient, and secure exchange of information between higher education institutions while improving the overall mobility experience for students and administrative staff
Among the key recommendations shared by participating institutions are:
- starting implementation with a pilot group of partner institutions;
- focusing on internal change management and staff training;
- gradually integrating new digital workflows into daily university operations
The European Student Card Initiative, of which Erasmus Without Paper is a part, aims to digitalise Erasmus+ mobility administration, simplify procedures for students and higher education institutions, improve mobility management efficiency, and promote paperless processes within the European Higher Education Area
